Kukur Tihar- Worshipping the Dog

The Dog, the most faithful animal to humanity, is honored on the second day of Tihar ,Khicha (Dog) Puja . The day serves as an opportunity to thank dogs for protecting our homes and lives. Male dogs are generally honored and have a red Tika on their foreheads and a gorgeous garland around their necks. Dogs are also given nice meals by the people. A Tika and a garland can be spotted on almost every street dog. The dogs are also known as “Death’s Gatekeepers,” because it is thought that they can foresee dangers in the future. The fearsome Bhairab, the god of devastation, rides a dog as well. Also, they are worshipped for their loyalty.

Thus, honoring the dogs today helps to ward off hazards in the coming year. Nepalese police officers frequently present lovely garlands to patrol dogs to show their appreciation for their service to national security.
